| Shared note | Lived with her grandmother at Teston Woods until she was eight. Then lived with her own mother for two years, but didn't get on well with her mother who had a violent temper and used to hit her. Jane was then sent as a boarder, paid for by her parents, to a school known as Industrial Home For Girls in Sloane Street, London. Many of the other pupils were orphans and were called Charity Children. She inherited a sum of money from her God Mother. Her parents invested this in a pub, but couldn't make it pay, and lost the lot. On leaving school, Jane went into service. One of her mother's sisters (her aunt) married the brother of the mother of the man she was to marry (his uncle), and it was through this relationship that she met her husband. She was in good health at the outbreak of the Second World War. The family believe it was through having to spend nights in the cold damp air-raid shelter which caused or aggravated the illness that killed her |
